When Eleanor Wren is invited to stay with an old friend, she thinks she's safe from the phantom world. Her friend's family is known for having one of the last remaining labyrinths in the country, and so it's only natural that she give it a go. Once inside, however, she realizes a terrible truth that no matter which way she turns, she might never get out.

Into the Maze The Eleanor Wren Stories Book 3 edition by Eleanor Wren BP Morrison Literature Fiction eBooks

I want to preface my review by saying that Into the Maze, the third installment of the short story series revolving around the adventures and ghostly encounters of the supernaturally gifted Eleanor Wren, is an excellent and exemplary work of fiction. This story is another masterwork in the art of mystery that creates a foreboding suspense around Eleanor's otherworldly adventure that is so strong as to leave the reader practically feigning for the ultimate discovery.

However, as is typical of the Eleanor Wren stories, there is no big reveal, no neat package to wrap up all of the loose ends that will entangle you in a web of bewilderment and intrigue that is much like maze itself. Ah, the maze. There couldn't have been a perfect motif to represent the puzzling and almost dream-like nature of Eleanor's encounter with a vision from a world not her own. I have always found something particularly sinister about ghost children. Perhaps it is the idea of a concept as scary as the un-dead, enshrouded in the innocent visage of a pint-size human. I couldn't help but wonder if the little girl who appeared before our narrator was leading Eleanor to an untimely and horrific fate. There was something quite different about this specific supernatural situation in comparison to the ones Eleanor has experienced before. She seemed more frenzied, confused and more out-of-control than ever as she fumbled her way out of this trap of spiritual proportions. It was the sense that Eleanor could be on the cusp of imminent danger that served to heighten my anticipation throughout the story.

What I love most about the stories in this series is that the anticipation never leaves you, even after you've approached the last word on the last page. There were still so many unanswered questions to grapple with. Why did the little girl appear before Eleanor? Was she hurt or in danger? Was there something sinister underlying Victoria's miscarriage? How will Eleanor recover from this? The author gives you the pieces of this story and then leaves you to meditate with them, to try and make sense of them, to take from them what you will and use it to further your understanding of this woman and the mysterious circumstances of her ever adventurous existence. Finishing one of these stories always makes me feel a lot closer to completing the puzzle that is Eleanor Wren and her life, and I can't wait to continue exploring with the next story.
