Julie Hill is one the most successful trainers in the history of international sheepdog trials. She has won the ISDS International Supreme Championship as well as the International Brace Championship, International Driving Championship, International Farmer's Championship, and International Shepherd's Championship. The 2014 edition of the book is new and revised, and is sold with a companion DVD. Julie's method of sheepdog training is based on the natural behavior of dogs. She uses body language to communicate with the dog in its own language and to establish the handler as the pack leader. Using a round pen to start young dogs without sheep, Hill incorporates techniques used by horse whisperers to encourage the dog to "join up" with the handler while communicating through body language. Body language is then used to train the dog on sheep. The book and DVD cover canine body language and the full range of sheepdog training, from working with young puppies to training advanced skills. I found it helpful to watch Hill demonstrate her techniques on the DVD, especially because she uses Ban and Mac, her International Brace Champions. The book has helpful tips throughout and many examples of problem solving, plus tips on how to read sheep and build the dog's feel for sheep. At some points in the video, it was difficult to hear Hill's voice while she was training (a common problem in sheepdog videos), but the DVD is narrated so it was not a big problem for me. The Natural Way has enough basic information to guide a novice, yet it is an in-depth manual on sheepdog training. If you want unique, natural training methods and practical advice from a Supreme Champion, this is it.
Tentative poor review based solely on the first few chapters. Most collies reflect poorly on the handler pressure techniques espoused. Occasional hat tip to the dog offered but I'm afraid it reads as 'dog not respecting' handler means increase pressure to confirm.
